Websites, blogs and web pages

Three months after the marketing and websites workshop, we asked the participants to tell us about their new online marketing tools.

The workshop on 24 February 2007 was led by Nick Rosenthal and Vernon Blackmore. Nick has his own blog, called Oversetter (the literal translation of the German word for a translator): www.salftrans.co.uk/blog/oversetter

Elisabeth Hippe-Heisler's blog:

http://hippe-heisler.blogspot.com

Elisabeth started her blog just a few days after the workshop and believes using it to record CPD events she has attended can make it a powerful marketing tool. She also has a website and an entry on ProZ, both of which link back to her blog.

Sarah Dillon's blog:

http://nakedtranslator.blogspot.com

Sarah says her blog was free and easy to set up. It also lets her track visitors - she has built up a reasonably sized readership around the world already, without having done much to promote it. Some of the hardest aspects are generating her own content and finding the time to update it. She doesn't have her own website, but she does have listings on ProZ and LinkedIn, a professional networking site.

Charlie Gobbett's website:

www.communique-online.com

Charlie has completely redesigned his website in the three months since the workshop using NetObjects Fusion (as recommended by Vernon during the workshop). He spent about £80 on the software and spent about three days putting the site together. The French translation was done by Lucie Brione.

Matt Young's website:

www.mattyoungtranslations.co.uk

Matt also used NetObjects Fusion to create his own website and estimates that designing the site took him around 10 hours, not including writing the text and looking at other websites to decide what to include. His website is hosted by Vernon Blackmore's company, Ambit New Media.
The character set of the Japanese page had to be set differently to get the text to display properly.

Andrew Diaz-Russell's website:

www.spanishenglishfrench
interpretingandtranslation.co.uk

Andrew has added a logo and a slogan to his website since the workshop.
Ros Mendy's website:

www.rosmendy.co.uk

Ros has updated the information on her website and added a photo. She is still considering whether to start a blog - maybe one that combines translation and choral singing...
More feedback:

Rebecca Smith already had a website she was happy with (click here to see it), but says that the workshop helped with her confidence in approaching translation companies.

Nicola Pacult is still deciding whether or not to set up a website. She finds being a member of GoTranslators very useful and has a GoTranslators web page (click here to see it).
